The final segment of our 4-part series on why the Earth is warming

Through this series we’ve shown that the Earth is getting hotter. In an attempt to find out why, we’ve looked at some of the most commonly cited potential causes.

Starting with natural causes, we were able to rule out things like Earth’s orbit, volcanoes, and the sun itself. Next we took a look at some man-made possibilities including deforestation, ozone pollution, and aerosols. None of these factors look to be responsible for the warming we’re seeing.

So what’s left? If you guessed greenhouse gases, you’d be right. The graphs paint a very clear picture that’s hard to dispute.

It really is greenhouse gases

We know greenhouse gases cause warming, but are they really responsible for as much as we’re seeing?

Not quite. They’re actually responsible for more. Since 1750, greenhouse gases have increased by 40%. The graph shows it’s really no contest. Greenhouse gases are the only factor that have caused significant warming.

Putting them all together

Looking at just greenhouse gases still doesn’t paint a complete picture. But if we combine all of the man-made factors, we get the following graph.

Now we can see how closely all of the human factors fall in line with the actual temperature increase we’ve seen. It’s true that some things we do actually cool the Earth (these have their own problems), but those are more than offset by greenhouse gases.

Want to help make a change?

Climate scientists around the world are saying we need to keep the planet from warming more than 2 degrees to avoid huge problems. And while this may sound like an impossible task, it’s actually not! There are things each one of us can do to help keep the Earth from warming more.

President Obama just released his Clean Power Plan, which will limit greenhouse gas emissions from power plants throughout the United States.

That’s a great start. And we can all be part of this effort and create a huge domino effect with each action we take, no matter how small.

There are simple things you can do in your own life to help right now. Get in touch with a Domino energy savings concierge today to see what options are best for you. Your concierge will not only recommend energy-saving tips, but may discover you’re an excellent candidate for something like solar or green power. We can all make a difference, and your Domino concierge is here to make it easy.
